Veterans Accommodations Toolkit: Workplace Resources for Disabled Veterans

This webinar featured presenters from Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC)/ATU Local 1220 in Virginia and Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD) in Illinois.
- GRTC and ATU Local 1220 partnered to implement a mentorship program for their bus operators that launched in 2024. Presenters will describe that process, how the program has grown, and the benefits that it has provided.
- MTD launched its bus operator mentorship program in 2023 and has tracked metrics showing the program’s impact. Responding to both quantitative measures and qualitative feedback and observations, MTD is working to restructure the program to better meet the needs of the transit agency and the bus operators participating in the program as mentees or mentors.

Description: This program aims to provide technical assistance (TA) to employers (which may include public sector entities) and labor unions in the United States and its territories to encourage employment of women in both apprenticeable occupations and nontraditional occupations (A/NTO), specifically in the following ways:
- Developing (establishing, expanding, and/or enhancing) pre-apprenticeship, youth apprenticeship, Registered Apprenticeship (as defined in Appendix B “Acronyms and Definitions”), or other nontraditional skills training programs designed to prepare women for careers in A/NTO;
- Providing ongoing orientations or other resources for employers, unions, and workers on creating a successful environment for women in A/NTO; and/or
- Setting up support groups, facilitating networks, and/or providing supportive services (as defined in section IV.E.3) for women in A/NTO to improve their retention.
Applicants may propose to provide technical assistance to support women’s participation and success in the full range of industries in which women are historically underrepresented or where women are disproportionately concentrated in the lower-wage occupations. Such industries include, but are not limited to; advanced manufacturing, construction, energy, health care, information technology, finance, and transportation. Applicants with experience working with or as an equity intermediary are encouraged to apply, as well as applicants with a proposed focus on expanding outreach/recruitment to historically underrepresented communities, including but not limited to women of color and women with disabilities, women at or below the federal poverty line, formerly incarcerated women, immigrant women, transgender women, and women who live in rural geographic areas

Transit Safety and Security
TSI’s training programs are designed and delivered to provide critical safety and security information, best practices, and regulatory guidance. Upon successful completion of TSI training courses, attendees receive tools and resources which enable participants to enhance the safety and security programs within their respective agency. Course materials are routinely updated to ensure all pertinent regulatory requirements are addressed in each training course.

This report aims to provide a brief update to a 2010 study on paratransit operator recruitment and retention, focusing not just on operators but on the entire paratransit workforce, including a range of frontline roles. To learn more about the unique workforce challenges of this modal context, as well as what successful strategies paratransit providers have used to combat those challenges, the Transit Workforce Center (TWC) research team conducted interviews involving 22 individuals across 13 paratransit systems in nine states. This report documents our learning from those interviews.

Since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990, paratransit has been a staple component of public transportation systems across the United States. ADA complementary paratransit provides transportation to people who, because of a disability, cannot use fixed-route service independently. Despite the importance of this mode in the overall health of urban transportation infrastructure, very little research has focused on the development of the paratransit workforce since a seminal 2010 study on paratransit operator recruitment and retention.
